Owyhee Jasper

Classic Owyhee Jasper ,from the "Owyhee Gem" Mine in Owyhee county which is in southern Idaho and Eastern Oregon. 38 miles of narrowing dirt(if you are lucky) road will get you to the "Owyhee Gem" picture jasper mine. If you go at the wrong time of the year you encounter "Owyhee Gumbo"which is a cousin to the famous red mud of South Carolina. Your tires get bigger as you go until you cannot go anymore and the walk back to the nearest town is a very long one. Jasper is basically petrified mud and the "Owyhee Gumbo" makes great jasper. There are 3 jasper mines within a mile of each other, the Owyhee Gem, the Wildhorse, and the Rocky Butte. The Classic Owyhee Jasper is very famous and I will provide you with a good selection of cabochons.(note: the "Owyhee Gem" is a privately owned mine and permission as well as a good 4-wheel drive vehicle is needed before attempting to visit.) This picture illustrates some of the wide variety of patterns and shapes that are available at Outback and you can see it is "Uniquely Idaho".
