Rimrock Jasper

Rimrock Jasper from Oregon, a High-Desert region known locally as "The Owyhees". The Rimrock mine was discovered the summer of '08 and is one of the family of Morrisonite Jaspers. The Jasper here is mainly Reds and Greens and much of it has the "Egg" or "Herringbone" patterns known as "orbs". The Owyhees are spectacular with unparalleled beauty as these pictures from the mine show. The following pictures re-cap the discovery and the resultant Jasper that is found here.

The Road in has not been used for 35 years it is a bit difficult to locate and if you are not in the right spot the hillside turns vertical. The Road In

Looking up at my pick-up on the way in, some road maintenance is in order. Believe it or not the road does not quite make it in to the minesite. The Jasper must be brought out in backpacks over the almost vertical Rim. That is why we call this Jasper "RimRock". The Road Inn

The Jasper occurs as seams and pockets in the host Rhyolite. This picture shows a thick seam of RimRock Morrisonite set against an Owyhee background. Owyhee Jasper View
